Return to Longfellow Pond, page 2
6 August 2006
Sunlight filters through the trees near the pond. The upward pointing arrow is a symbol of inevitability of progress and the defeat of fascism, fundamentalism, conservatism, and reaction, all of which will end up on the trash heap of history.
Purple. Green.
A honeybee, Apis mellifera. This species is an invader from Europe, not native to North America.
I am not sure what species of bee this is.
A monarch butterfly, Danaus plexippus.

"You are here". Wellesley has a remarkable number of walking trails.
A black swallowtail butterfly, Papilio polyxenes.

I am not sure what butterfly this is.
The same butterfly can be seen in the upper right of the picture.
Pine trees beside the aqueduct.
On the way home, I found someone had spray-painted words of wisdom on the sidewalk: no to Verizon, no to RCN and the rest of the cable industry, and no to television. I daresay the community that lives by these principles will remain forever strong, prosperous, and free. Here too is the upward pointing arrow, symbol of progress, repeated three times. It is a good omen.
