Hemlock Gorge in Springtime, page 2

The house adjacent to the bridge includes a nifty third floor observation deck.

This sluice was part of an old mill at the mouth of the gorge, no longer in existence.

The spillway from the old mill sluice runs under Boylston Street (Route 9) and rejoins the river.

And here am I.

This is Horseshoe Dam (also called Circular Dam), at the mouth of Hemlock Gorge. The building in the background is called the Stone Barn.

This is Hemlock Gorge as seen from its mouth, where Boylston Street crosses the river to become Worcester Street, Wellesley.

The Stone Barn is the last surviving building of the former Boylston Street mill complex.

An automated river flow measuring device operated by the U.S. government is the Stone Barn's only tenant.

Afte passing over Horseshoe Dam, the Charles passes under the stone arch of the Boylston Street bridge. Newton Lower Falls, through which I passed two weeks ago, is about a mile downstream from here.

Here are Echo Bridge and the former Newton Mills complex as seen from the water's edge downstream.

I once lived in this house near the intersection of Chestnut and Ellis Streets in Newton Upper Falls.

It's not as dangerous as it seems; this "avenue" is a short dead-end street.

The quickest way home is via the former New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad Woonsocket Division. When I was last here, it was the dead of winter.
