A Fungus Among Us
Cutler Park, 9 September 2006
Cutler Lake, or Kendrick Pond, on a bright September afternoon.
A northern leopard frog, Rana pipiens. Believe it or not, this is only the second one I've ever seen in the wild; the first was this past Thursday at the WCNX transmitter site in Hope Valley, Rhode Island.
The Charles River winds serenely past wood and marsh.
Sunlight filters through the trees along the river bank.
The path from the river runs into the woods to join the main forest path.

This is the boardwalk to Powell's Island. Compare this view from last May.
This is the Powell's Island clearing, where at least three different paths converge.

There is a fungus among us.
Whenever I emerge from the woods I encounter the smell of grapes. They seem to grow wild here.
This path leads from Powell's Island toward the railroad embankment.
